Middle Tennessee is home to multiple colleges and universities that attract students from around the United States and around the world. Middle Tennessee State UniversityMTSU is located on a 466 acre campus in Murfreesboro, TN. It was founded in 1911 as a two-year training school for teachers. Over the years, MTSU has evolved into a well-respected, full-service university, offering both graduate and undergraduate degrees. In 2009, Forbes Magazine ranked it as one of the top 100 public universities in the United States. The School is highly regarded for its Recording Industry, Mass Communications, Aerospace, Concrete Industry Management, and Human Services departments. Belmont UniversityTracing its roots back to 1889, Belmont University enjoys a rich Nashville history. The school's campus is on land that once comprised the grounds of Belmont Mansion, former home of wealthy socialite and business woman Adelicia Acklen. The mansion, built in 1850, is an impressive 19,000 square foot home that is open to the public and welcomes guests for special occasions.

U.S. News and World Report has consistently recognized Belmont, a private university, as one of the top regional universities in the country. Vanderbilt UniversityWidely referred to as "The Harvard of the South",  Vanderbilt was founded in 1873. A private research university, Reuters ranked Vanderbilt as the 10th Most Innovative University in the world. It is recognized throughout the world for its schools of Medicine, Nursing, Law, Music, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Graduate School programs.

Vanderbilt's 333 acre campus is a mile and a half southwest of downtown Nashville. Some of the city's most appreciated historic buildings are on the Vanderbilt Campus, the oldest dating to approximately 1859. The original Peabody College portion of the campus was placed on the National Historic Register in 1966.

Vanderbilt's enrollment includes students from all 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. Lipscomb UniversityLipscomb University stands on 83 acres, located in Nashville's Green Hills Community. It is a private, Christian University founded in 1891 as Nashville Bible School. Today, still affiliated with the Church of Christ, Lipscomb offers a full liberal arts curriculum. U.S. News and World Reports has ranked Lipscomb as 18th among Regional Universities in the South.

The university has earned a strong reputation for its Colleges of Bible and Ministry, Business, Technology, Education, Engineering, Entertainment Arts, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Leadership and Public Service, Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Tennessee State UniversityTSU has a proud legacy as the largest historically African American University in Tennessee. Founded in 1912, the school occupies a 500 acre campus that is roughly 3 miles from downtown Nashville. Tennessee State offers 38 Bachelor's degrees, 24 Master's Degrees, and 7 Doctoral Degrees. It is the only public university in the city of Nashville, and has built the largest Health Science program in the state.

Tennessee State is divided into 8 colleges, the Colleges of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Life and Physical Sciences, and the College of Public Services.

Other Middle Tennessee Schools Long before Nashville earned the nickname Music City, it had earned a different moniker: The Athens of the South.The influence of its excellent standards for education steadily spread outward, extending beyond its boundaries to neighboring counties. Middle Tennessee is home to Nashville's MeHarry Medical School, Fisk University, Lebanon's Cumberland University, Gallatin's Vol State, and Nashville's Aquinas College. Middle Tennessee also has a number of well regarded Community Colleges and Trade Schools.
